Baysal was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on May 2007, in Turkey, her native country. After an ultrasound and a computer tomography, two main tumors were observed; one in the head and a second one at the tail of the pancreas. Additionally, a number of metastatic lesions were found in the liver and lungs.
The doctor’s prognosis of Baysal’s condition was grim – they gave her no more than 3-6 months to live. They offered her one treatment option – chemotherapy.
Baysal and her family were determined not to give up, and find any way possible to fight the cancer. They started researching other treatment options available, and refused to put their hope on chemotherapy alone. However, they have found that the doctors in Turkey were reluctant to help
Around that time, Baysal has watched a show on Turkish television, in which she was introduced to Gene Therapy. Encouraged but hesitant, Baysal and her family have begun their investigation on gene therapy for cancer, and after getting in touch with Dr. Dinggang Li, from the gene therapy center at Phoenix hospital in Beijing, they made up their mind to travel to China for treatment.
Baysal arrived in Beijing in July 2007, two months after her diagnosis.
Her treatment at the Phoenix cancer center was combined of gene therapy (local injections of Gendicine), localized and full body Hyperthermia, HIFU, Nimotuzumab and conventional therapy such as chemotherapy (Gemzar+Cisplastin), alongside Traditional Chinese medicine.
Gene therapy was the core of the treatment. Local injections of ‘Gendicine’ (P53 tumor suppressor gene and modified adenovirus serotype 5) has been administered directly into the abdominal cavity. In this way, the tumor suppressor gene was expected to reach not only the visible tumors but all micro-macro lesions, in pancreas and liver.
The injections, said Baysal, were not extremely painful but she did experience some pain in the first half an hour after the injection, and developed a fever that last for two days after the procedure.
The medical team which treated her was professional and highly attentive, says Baysal. She did not feel that the language was a communication barrier since most of the staff spoke English. The supportive attitude at the hospital and the fact that her family has been beside her during her treatment was of great help and encouragement to her.
The tests conducted after the treatments have shown that the cancer was in remission and metastasis process halted. With the help of gene therapy and the combined treatment she received in Beijing, Baysal is still alive and fighting the disease, two years after her diagnosis and her doctors’ grim prognosis.
1.5 years after the treatment, Baysal’s cancer has returned. She is currently fighting the disease in her country. Baysal and her son, Sarp, are happy to share their story of coming to Beijing, China, to receive Gene Therapy treatment for Cancer. Sarp Dincer can be reached at dincer@teknikdestekgrubu.com.tr
Baysal says: I still strongly believe this is the best treatment I can find all over the world. Unfortunately, due to some personal issues it is difficult for me to come back for a second treatment. Traveling to China and undergoing two months of treatments is not easy, but the results are hopeful and worth the effort. I do strongly recommend to other patients to consider gene therapy and travel to China to be assisted by Dr. Li and his stuff.
